What Exactly is Social-Emotional Learning?
yd2

Social-Emotional Learning is critical in educating the heart and mind.

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children, youth and adults understand and manage emotions, while gaining insight in both personal and social context.  SEL fosters resilience, connection, intra and interpersonal skills, enabling positive decision making and management.

What Are The Components of Social-Emotional Learning?

Self Awareness

Self Awareness is the ability to reflect on and understand our thoughts, behaviours and emotions as we gain insight into our strengths and areas of growth.

Self Management

Self Management is about learning to regulate the way we respond to our internal and external landscape.  We use self management to set goals, motivate ourselves and manage our emotions.

Responsible Decision Making

Responsible decision making allows us to weigh out options, consider choices, and make decisions reflective of our goals and desired outcomes.

Relationship Skills

Relationships skills enable us to make and maintain healthy relationships, while fostering interpersonal skills such as clear communication, cooperation, assertiveness, and conflict resolution.

Social Awareness

Social awareness helps us understand perspectives outside of our own.  Social awareness builds empathy, and helps us see and hold diverse opinions.
